The University of Madras was established in 1857 along with Mumbai and Calcutta Universities. Having served the cause of higher education and research for the past, in 2000, the University of Madras was accredited for the first time by the NAAC and was awarded with “5 Star Status”. Subsequently, in 2007, UoM was re-accredited by the NAAC and awarded “A grade”. UoM enjoys the special status of “University with Potential for Excellence” with special assistance from the University Grants Commission. Madras University has been consistently listed among top ranked universities for its academics and research output. Internationally, the university was ranked 70th in the QS University Rankings: BRICS 2013. When ranked by the number of international students, the university is placed 1st in India and 11th among BRICS nations. UoM imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology shape the academic environment of the University. A number of institutions affiliated to UoM concentrate on research activities offering PhD Programmes in their respective field of specialization. The 93 University Departments of study and research are spread over four campuses organized into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specializations, part time and full time PhD Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes. The University has established a Human Resource Development Centre which is systematically organizing various professional staff development programmes such as Orientation courses, Refresher courses and other short-term courses/workshops/training programmes. There is also distance education and Alumni organization.
